When Life Throws You a Curve…or a Torn ACL

Last week, I was skiing with my family, eagerly anticipating laughter, fresh powder, and a relaxing après-ski beer. Unfortunately, things took an unexpected turn. On our last descent, as my husband and I headed back, I experienced a minor fall that proved more serious than anticipated—a torn ACL.

As I sat frozen, unsure whether to call for help or try to navigate down the mountain myself, I quickly realized I wasn’t alone. My husband made the call, and within minutes, the ski patrol arrived, helping me down the mountain with my swelling knee and slightly bruised pride. It was a humbling reminder that sometimes, we need to ask for help when we least expect to need it.

Now, resting with my leg elevated, I’ve had ample time to reflect. None of this was in my 2025 planner. Who schedules an “impromptu knee remodel” between client meetings and an upcoming book launch?

At AfterLight, we understand how life’s unexpected twists can throw us off course, much like my experience on the ski slopes. This is especially true following the loss of a loved one, which comes with its own avalanche of unforeseen challenges and responsibilities.
