#TBT to When I Quit my Job to Settle an Estate

Last Wednesday was National Grief Awareness Day, and while you might be thinking, “What’s that got to do with my workplace?” – bear with me for a moment, because it’s a lot more relevant than you might think.

In recent years, we’ve seen more attention focused on the impact of grief in the workplace. Trust me, I’m not just throwing articles at you; I’ve lived it.

10 years ago, I left a job of only 8 months. Not because it wasn’t a good fit, but because I was drowning in executor duties.

You see, just a few months earlier, I’d lost my mom. Dealing with her estate became a complex maze, one that forced me to make a decision I never could have seen coming. I found myself responsible for clearing out and selling five houses, on top of caring for my uncle who eventually passed away as well. Then, I took on the role of Co-Executor of his estate.

And all this while trying to be a full-time employee, mother of two, keeping the household together, and staying happily married (because life doesn’t stop, even when death pays a visit).

Statistics say it takes an average of 500 hours for an executor to settle an estate. In my case, it took almost 10 years in total to untangle the web of complexities. This experience drove me to create AfterLight, firmly believing that we can’t erase the pain of loss, but we can certainly make life a bit easier by tackling those logistical challenges that often make grief feel even heavier.

At AfterLight, we’re on a mission to shoulder the burden of after-loss logistics. We want to give you the space to focus on healing and cherishing the memories of your loved ones. We’re here to ensure that your loved one’s legacy is honored with the care and respect it truly deserves.
