Does The Word “Resolutions” Make You Cringe?

I’ll be honest, I have a love/hate relationship with New Year’s resolutions. Throughout the years as the clock has rolled over, I’ve vowed to eat better, exercise more, spend more quality time with my kids or get on my Peloton more times a week. And while I think it’s good to have goals and motivation, some resolutions can sometimes be hard despite the best of intentions.

In my experience, I’ve noticed that the success of a resolution can be dependent on the WIIFM (“What’s in it for me?”). For example, you might set a goal to lose weight, eat better or work out, resulting in feeling better or more energetic in a couple of days or weeks. In this case, there’s instant gratification.

But what happens when a resolution doesn’t have an immediate or even a prolonged benefit? This is especially true for things like getting your estate affairs in order or settling an estate, which can make it super hard to stay the course.

I hear statements like this all of the time:

“Rachel, I’ve been meaning to get my affairs in order so my kids aren’t burdened after I’m gone but I just haven’t gotten around to it. Things have been so busy.”
“Rachel, I’ve been meaning to settle my mom’s estate but just don’t know where to start. I’m so overwhelmed.”

I can see the guilt, overwhelm and frustration in their eyes. They’ve been carrying this weight on their shoulders for months, sometimes even years, and now they’re just stuck.

P.S. If you’re one of the 29% of Americans who made resolutions this year, we salute you. Keep on rocking that Dry January, Veganuary or whatever else it is you’re doing.
